The John Riddell-Swan Scholarship

The scholarship will be awarded to a postgraduate research student who is accepted onto a full-time PhD programme at the University of Edinburgh within The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. The scholarship has a value of £16,000 which will be paid in two instalments at the beginning of each academic semester.

Applicants from outside the European Union are welcome to apply, but are advised also to apply for an ORS award, which would fund the difference between EU and non-EU fee rates.

The funding for this award was made in memory of Mr John Riddell-Swan, by his wife Minnie. John was born in Stranraer, Galloway, and graduated from the University in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1948. He spent most of his working life in Hong Kong & the New Territories, where he became a senior official in the Hong Kong government, before retiring with Minnie to Australia.

The John Riddell-Swan Scholarship was established by Minnie on 15 February 2006 to mark what would have been John's 80th birthday. In addition to establishing a permanent scholarship, Minnie presented The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies with a beautiful, silver dish that was presented to John on his retirement, and an OBE Medal which was awarded for services to the people of Hong Kong (click here to view); both items are now on display in the Vet School.

It is Minnie's hope and desire that the John Riddell-Swan Scholarship will fund post-graduate research of the highest quality, and of global significance.

Criteria

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit within Veterinary Medicine to an applicant who intends to undertake PhD study in the field of Comparative Veterinary Medicine. Candidates will be required to have a UK upper second-class degree (or equivalent) from a recognised university . In the eventuality of two or more candidates being equally suitable for the award, preference will be given to a candidate who is both a resident of Britain (minimum of three years preceding application) and a holder of a British passport.

A completed scholarship application form should be received by the Scholarships and Student Finance Office by the closing date of 1 May 2007 in order to be considered for the scholarship. The Selection Committee will only consider scholarship applications from candidates who have been admitted to or are holding an offer of admission to the University of Edinburgh for the 2007-2008 academic session.

Selection Procedure

A Selection Committee will meet in late May 2007 to select the scholarship holder. The winner of the scholarship will be announced in late May 2007.
